Unusual Fore edge painting depicting deck of cards Sold
A fore edge painting that is very different from the usual run of the mill quaint rural scene. A complete deck of cards has been painted to the fore edge of Goldmsith's Poems, c. 1850 a nicely bound copy in red morocco, rubbed, corners a little scuffed, aeg, still a pretty binding. A small slip of paper has been stuck to the front free endpaper matching a 'fortune' to the cards; e.g. journey by water, you will never want, change awaits you etc Clearly designed as an amusing fortune telling device; choose a card and discover your fortune by reference to the paper. The fore edge is very well done by a skilled hand.
