Two vols of the first edition of this work by Charles Smith, the Irish topographer. Published 1750 by A. Reilly for the author and sold by J. Exshaw, bookseller on Cork Hill. Excellent copies of this rare, early work of Irish topography, polished calf, corners a little furred, hinges a little rubbed, but very solid binding. Spines with gilt titles, morocco labels. 13 plates, some folding including large map of the county of Cork. A rare pamphlet titled The King against Arthur O'Connor, Esq. James O'Coighly, John Binns, John Allen and Jeremiah Leary for High Treason. A List of the Jury to be summoned for the trial of the above-named Defendents. 4pp listing the local men from Kent towns who comprised the jury at this trial at Maidstone. The list is extensive showing the diverse backgrounds of the men from Richard Stone, banker of Chislehurst to William Wilmot, Paper Maker of Chevening, to Thomas Jarrett Wine-Merchant of Speldhurst and several farmers. Solicitors, Simmons, Bonney and Foulkes from Rochester, Maidstone and Bloomsbury respectively. The defendents had been arrested in France while petitioning napoleon for help in supporting an Irish Rebellion. The pamphlet is in very good condition, mounted along one edge to backing card.
