The Natural History of the Fishes of the Firth of Forth and Tributaries, Richard Parnell, Private copy from the memoirs of the Wernerian History Society. 308 pages of text, plates of fish bound at rear numbered XVIII to XLIV with extra plate numbered XXXIII*, i.e . All correct. Plain black cloth. Looks like the author's presentation copy - inscription to title page reads 'Mr. William Banks with the complts of the' but the page has been trimmed. Some plates also trimmed presumably when rebound but without loss. A Vg copy.

John Lawrence A Philosophical and Practical Treatise on Horses and on the Moral Duties of Man towards the Brute Creation, 1810 3rd edition with large additions. Lawrence was one of the important figures in the development of the idea of Animal Rights. One chapter is entitled The Rights of Beasts where he calls for legislation recognising that animals have the right not to be cruelly treated and for offenders to be punished. 2 volumes complete. Volume one 624 pp; Volume two 572 pp. Both volumes bound in polished calf, rebacked in leather with new titles, gilt banding. One spine very slightly darker. Hinges strengthened with linen tape. Corners little scuffed. Solidly bound. Bookplate of William Marshall to both volumes, 1745 - 1818 a writer on agriculture and a great rival of Arthur Young, who seemed to trump him at every turn in his career.

The 'additions' in this, the third edition amount to over 100 new pages running from p. 454 in Volume two, so a substantial reworking from the earlier editions. Index to both volumes.

A very few pages a little tanned, little bit of foxing but really a very good handsome two volume copy of this rare work.
