South African memoir 1906 possibly unique? Price: £250.00
A rare privately printed memoir of early twentieth century South Africa, specifically the area around Durban. Marian Vidler was part of a well known family in Rye, East Sussex. She accompanied the vicar of Rye and his wife and family to Durban where they took up their new post in 1903 at St Cyprian's, Durban. The book takes the form of several letters home to Rye, and after her return 18 months later, they were clearly printed up by local printer JL Deacon in book form. How many copies were printed? Possibly only one, certainly no more than a handful for friends and family since it is marked for private circulation only The text includes several pasted in photographs and crayon drawings (printed from the originals). The memoir is an eye witness account of life in South Africa at this time with observations of the native peoples as well as the expatriate community. Marian also takes a trip up country to look at the Boer War battlefields. 294 pages. octavo. the pages run from 1-276 and 279-294 but there is no break in the text. The pages 279-294 are printed on different paper and appear to be an afterthought since the next letter is bracketed (omitted). The final leaf is the same paper as pages 1-276 so the final section appears to be a late interpolation. Buff coloured faded boards. Good condition. A fascinating and possibly unique book. More...
